The Magnificent Moray Coast and Beyond

Starting off at Spey Bay, where you have a chance to see the dolphins playing in the Moray Firth. Here you can visit the Scottish Dolphin Centre, and learn more about these wonderful sea creatures, and even adopt one if you want to support the dolphin’s future! From here we follow the coastline along to Portgordon, where there is both common and grey seals sharing the same space, which is relatively unusual. My next stop would be in Portknockie, to go and see Bowfiddle Rock, an amazing natural sea arch, which I like to call “The Dead Whale’s Tail” when taken from a different view point! Here there is the opportunity to take a walk along the cliffs and down to the beach in Cullen Bay, and stop in the old fishing village of Cullen. Here you can eat in the Rockpool Café, where you can try real traditional Cullen Skink as a delicious treat! I would have to book in advance for a table here, so please let me know if this is of interest to you. After lunch we would head to Cullen House, one of the most beautiful masonry mansions in the area – there is restricted access here, but there’s nothing stopping us from taking a look at the outside. On to Findlater Castle, a 13th century castle ruin, situated on top of a 50 foot cliff. You can take a small hike down to the ruins and explore some of our ancient history. From here we will drive to St. Johns churchyard, seated on the cliff tops overlooking Gardenstown – one of the oldest graveyards, and which 200 years ago still had Viking skulls along the perimeter of the wall. Onwards to Troup Head Nature Reserve, where we find the largest mainland gannet colony in Scotland, and also home to guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins and razorbills. You are on top of a cliff here, so you can watch the birds from above and really see them in their natural habitat. We finish the day in Pennan, which only appeared on the map after the hit movie ‘Local Hero’ – a picturesque fishing village, where you can see where many of the scenes were set, or have a drink in the pub that was featured in the film.
